How to Throw a “First Trip Around the Sun” Birthday Party on a Budget

Our youngest just turned one, and we celebrated with a “1st Trip Around the Sun” birthday party. The theme was so fun, and the decorations were incredibly easy. Even the cake was simple to make! If you’re looking for a budget-friendly, space-themed party idea, here’s exactly how we pulled it together.

Backdrop & Table Setup

I used the oversized tablecloths for our cake smash backdrop. They were huge, exactly what I needed. I recommend opening them a few days early so they can air out and flatten. They had a strong plastic smell and were pretty wrinkled. A hair dryer helped with creases, though a few were still noticeable.

For extra sparkle, I ordered a star garland just for the backdrop. It was perfect and came with way more stars than I expected. We decorated the entire party area and still had leftovers. My only warning: don’t let them tangle! They’re a nightmare to untwist once knotted.

Easy Moon Cake

I had a completely different plan for the cake, but in the end, I kept it simple. I made a chocolate cake, covered it in white frosting, and used my fingertip to make circular swirls all over. It gave a subtle moon crater effect that fit the space theme perfectly.

Plates, Cups, and Final Touches

The plates, cups, and napkins came from a mix of Target, our local party store, and HomeGoods. Finally, our little astronaut wore an adorable NASA onesie from Etsy, which was the cutest finishing touch for the theme.

If you’re planning a “First Trip Around the Sun” party, keep it simple! The space theme is already magical, and you can pull it together with just a few affordable items.
